Rakim Athelaston Mayers was born in October of 1988 in the Upper Manhattan neighborhood of Harlem. In fact, his parents named him after the legendary rapper of the 1980s. Moreover, his parents’ names are Adrian and Renee.

His father, who is of Barbadian descent, was incarcerated for drug offenses when Rocky was 12. Afterward, he and his mother spent a short time living in a shelter before moving to Elmwood Park, New Jersey.

The rapper grew up with a brother named Ricky as well as a sister named Erika, who was named after DJ Eric B. Tragically, his brother was shot and killed near his apartment when Rocky was just 13 years old.

In 2007 at the age of 19, Rocky joined the crew known as A$AP Mob. The hip-hop collective had been formed by A$AP Yams, A$AP Bari, and A$AP Illz. However, it would take Rocky roughly four years to begin receiving recognition.

That came as a result of his July 2011 release of his song Purple Swag. In the coming months, he dropped his track titled Peso and his subsequent critically-acclaimed debut mixtape, Live. Love. A$AP.
