Early Life

Vince Staples was born on July 2, 1993, in Compton, California. His parents’ names have not been made public, but Staples has expressed his love and affection for his mother and father. The rapper grew up with four siblings, two sisters and two brothers, of which he is the youngest.

Staples and his family didn’t spend much time living in Compton following his birth. The reason, his mother wanted to escape the high crime rates within the city.

Thus, the family moved to North Long Beach, Long Beach, California where they’d remain for many years. The Staples family grew up in poverty.

Staples went to Optimal Christian Academy from fourth to eighth grade. However, his mother sent him to Atlanta during high school to live with one of his sisters, where he’d stay for six months. Upon returning to southern California, Staples attended five different high schools. Yet, he wouldn’t graduate, dropping out somewhere around 11th grade.

Staples has been involved with street gangs since a young child, claiming his mother, father, and all his brothers took part in gang activity as well. The emcee has long been considered affiliated with the crips.

Sports were a big part of the aspiring artist’s youth. He played cornerback in Snoop Dogg’s, Snoop Youth Football League (SYFL).

Rap Career

Staples first got his feet wet in the rap game by featuring on a few of Odd Future’s songs in 2009, most notably Earl Sweatshirt’s. Then, Staples dropped his debut mixtape in December of 2011 entitled Shyne Coldchain Vol. 1.

Things began rolling for him the next year when Sweatshirt introduced Staples to Mac Miller. Staples and Miller would release a mixtape called Stolen Youth that featured appearances from other Cali artists like Ab-Soul and Schoolboy Q. Staples would accompany Miller on his upcoming tour. Around that same time, Staples featured on Sweatshirt’s song Hive, which is one of the coldest verses you’ll ever hear.

A pair of mixtapes in 2014 entitled Shyne Coldchain Vol. 2 and Hell Can Wait, respectively, prepared Staples for his debut studio album.

Staples likes to keep the majority of his personal life private, but we know a few things about the rapper’s introspective lifestyle. For starters, he’s of African-American and Haitian descent. Also, he says he’s never done illicit drugs or drunk alcohol.

Additionally, Staples has done some philanthropist work, assisting in a YMCA program to help the youth of Long Beach. He donated money to the program that sets out to aid middle schoolers in the arts.
