Burna Boy is a Nigerian singer, rapper, and songwriter who is best known for being one of the most successful musical artists out of Africa since the turn of the century. His biggest song is Ye, which came off of his third studio album called Outside.

Early Life

Burna Boy was born Damini Ogulu on July 2, 1991, in Port Harcourt Nigeria to parents Samuel and Bose. His father managed a welding company and his mother worked as a translator. Burna’s sister is actually a singer who goes by the name of Nissi Nation and he has an older brother as well.

The Ogulu family has been involved with the music industry for many years as Burna’s grandfather once managed Nigerian composer Fela Kuti. Moreover, Burna’s mother now serves as his manager.

Burna Boy grew up in southern Nigeria and he and his siblings were raised single-handedly by their mother. The rapper first began beats at the age of 10 after a classmate introduced him to the software FruityLoops.

Burna is well educated having attended Montessori Primary School before enrolling at Corona Secondary School in Agbara. He later moved to London in search of further education, which he discovered at the University of Sussex where he studied Media Technology.

After founding and launching Spaceship Entertainment in 2015, Burna released his second album entitled On a Spaceship. Also that year, he dropped an EP called Redemption which contained seven tracks including the song Pree Me.

The project debuted at number three on the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart and it featured British artists J Hus, Lily Allen, and Mabel. The 13 track LP contained Burna’s most popular song, Ye. As of 2022, the song has received over 220 million streams on Spotify.
