Simu Liu was born in April of 1989 in Harbin, Heilongjiang, China to parents Zhenning and Zheng. Liu and his parents immigrated to Kingston, Ontario, Canada when he was five.

Before that, he was living with his grandparents in China. After immigrating, Liu was raised in Mississauga, Ontario where he would attend the University of Toronto Schools for high school.
