John Edward Mulaney was born in August of 1982 in Chicago, Illinois to parents Charles “Chip” Jr. and Ellen (née Stanton). His father was an attorney and partner at Skadden Arps, while his mother worked as a professor at Northwestern University Pritzker School of Law.

Meanwhile, both of his parents attended Georgetown University and Yale Law School. In fact, they attended the universities at the same time as future president Bill Clinton.

Mulaney, who is of Irish Catholic heritage, is the third of five children. He has an older sister named Carolyn as well as an older brother by the name of Chip. Additionally, he has a younger sister named Claire. Tragically, his younger brother, Peter, died at birth.

While in college, Mulaney joined the school’s improv group, and met comedians Nick Kroll and Mike Birbiglia. He would eventually accompany the latter on his stand-up tour.

After graduating, Mulaney moved to New York City where he was hired as an office assistant at Comedy Central. He was asked to audition for Saturday Night Live four years later after being discovered performing on Late Night with Conan O’Brien.

He won a spot on the writing team, where he remained for four seasons. Notably, he and Bill Hader co-created the popular SNL character Stefon. Mulaney won a Primetime Emmy in 2010.

Afterward, the comedian has contributed as a writer to a few other television works and even acted in a couple of supporting roles. Currently, he provides the voice of a lead character on the animated Netflix series Big Mouth.

As far as stand-up comedy is concerned, Mulaney has been at it for over 18 years by this point.

Personal Life

Mulaney married makeup artist and lampshade artisan Annamarie Tendler in July 2014. However, the couple officially announced their separation in May 2021. Interestingly, Mulaney had started dating actress Olivia Munn the same month as the separation according to People.

In addition to that, the couple had their first child, a son named Malcolm Hiệp, that same year.

Unfortunately, Mulaney has long battled with substance abuse issues. In December 2020, he checked into a rehab for alcoholism, cocaine addiction, and prescription drug abuse.
