Early Life
Joey Badass was born on January 20, 1995, in Brooklyn, New York City, New York. In fact, he was the very first of his immediate Caribbean family to be born in the United States. His maternal family comes from the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, while his paternal family originates from Jamaica.
The rapper was born in the East Flatbush section of Brooklyn and he grew up in Bed-Stuy. Joey enrolled at Edward R. Murrow High School to study acting, but he transitioned towards music during his freshman year.
Joey claims to have started writing poetry and songs at the age of 11 and he originally went by the name JayOhVee before changing to Joey Badass years later. High school is where Joey met his friend and fellow rapper, the late Capital Steez.
Rap Career
The BK emcee released a freestyle on YouTube in 2010 that garnered some attention after World Star Hip Hop caught wind of it. Then in 2012, Joey and Steez dropped their renowned Survival Tactics track.
Joey Badass 1999
The lyricist dropped his debut solo mixtape, 1999, in June of 2012. The project was highly thought of by essentially everyone who heard it and it gained Joey a lot of fans. The tape features tracks produced by J Dilla, MF DOOM, Statik Selektah, and more.
Laced with 15 songs, 1999 contains replayable cuts such as Summer Knights, Waves, Hardknock, amongst several others. Joey followed the mixtape with Rejex, which was all of the songs that didn’t make it onto 1999. Joey was ready for the spotlight.
Joey Badass Albums
His debut studio album, B4.DA.$$ was released in January of 2015. Immediately, fans and critics praised the work as it confirmed the emcee’s far-reaching talents. To this day, it’s sold upwards of 227,000 copies.
The 17 track deluxe edition album hardly has a skippable song. Standouts include Christ Conscious, Paper Trails, No. 99, and many others. Production ranged from Hit-Boy to DJ Premier to Pro Era signee Kirk Knight.
In April of 2017, Joey released his second and most recent studio album entitled All-Amerikkkan Bada$$. The 12 track project received generally positive reviews, but general consensus was that it didn’t live up to its predecessor.
While songs like Temptation, Devastated, and Legendary were great radio hits, the album didn’t offer the same old-school east coast feel as B4.DA.$$. Still, fans are clamoring for Joey to announce a new album as it’s been over four years since his last release.
Personal Life
Joey dated Vashtie Kola for a brief period in 2015. He has one child, a daughter named India Rain from a prior relationship. It’s not confirmed if he’s currently with someone or not.
The rapper is currently signed to Cinematic Music Group which is distributed by RED Distribution, a subsidiary of Sony Music Entertainment.
Joey famously turned down a deal with Roc Nation years back. He’s also a founding member of the Pro Era collective.
Joey Badass had a publicized beef with fellow NY rapper Troy Ave back in 2015 after Ave declared himself the top independent artist in the game. Then, Joey name-dropped Ave on his song Ready to which Ave responded with his own diss track called Badass.
The two still don’t get along to this day which has a lot to do with the fact Ave took aim at Joey’s deceased friend Capital Steez who took his own life. Joey fired back in a couple of freestyles, but nothing has occurred since.
