Ramón Luis Ayala Rodríguez was born in February of 1976 in Rio Piedras, San Juan to parents Ramón Ayala and Rosa Rodriguez. Specifically, the artist grew up in the Villa Kennedy Housing Projects neighborhood.

As a child, Yankee aspired to be a professional baseball player. In fact, he even tried out for the Seattle Mariners. Unfortunately, he was shot by a stray AK-47 bullet before he could be signed to the team.

Interestingly, he credits getting shot with allowing him to focus entirely on making music. Also, the bullet was never removed from his hip and it took him over a year and a half to fully recover from the wound.

Then in 2017, the singer donated $100,000 to the Food Bank of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria swept through the area. In the end, an estimated 9,000 families were given food as a result of the donation.
