Early Life

Holmes was born on April 26, 1982, in Campbellsville, Kentucky. He attended Taylor County High School where he started playing golf. During his time in high school, he played on the Pepsi Junior Golf Tour. Holmes then went to the University of Kentucky where he won SEC Title and also represented the United States in the 2005 Walker Cup.

Career

In 2005, he turned pro and was medalist at the 2005 PGA Tour Qualifying Tournament. Next year, he went on to win the FBR Open, making him the fastest golfer to reach $1,000,000 in career earnings on the PGA Tour. He managed to earn that figure on his fourth PGA Tour.

In 2007, his form fell away and entered top ten finishes only two times. He ended that year in 118^th place on the money list. In 2008, he won the FBR Open for the second time. With that win, he moved to 62^nd in the Official World Golf Ranking. At the end of the 2018, he reached a career-high ranking of 42.

At the 2008 Ryder Cup, Holmes defeated Soren Hansen 2 & 1 to bring the US within one point of winning the Ryder Cup. Holmes and his teammate, Kenny Perry, were named Kentuckians of 2008 by Kentucky Monthly magazine.

In 2011, he withdrew from the PGA Championship as he was dealing with vertigo symptoms for several months and was diagnosed with structural defects in the cerebellum. He returned to the PGA Tour in 2012 at the Farmers Insurance Open. After returning from brain surgery, he played in 26 events in 2012. In 2015, WGC-Cadillac Championship, Holmes finished runner-up and moved to 19^th in the world rankings, his highest ever placing to date.

Holmes has often been criticized for his slow play. In 2018, he was criticized by fellow pros on social media after taking four minutes and ten seconds over his second shot to the 18^th hole in the last round of the Farmers Insurance Open.
