William Gary Busey was born in June of 1944 in Goose Creek, Texas to parents Delmer Lloyd and Sadie Virginia (née Arnett). His father was a construction design manager, while his mother was a homemaker.

The family moved to Tulsa, Oklahoma when Busey was in the fourth grade. There, he attended Bell Junior High School and then Nathan Hale High School.

Afterward, Busey enrolled at Coffeyville Community College before going to Pittsburg State University in Kansas on a football scholarship. However, a knee injury ended his sports career.

Busey transferred to Oklahoma State University following the injury. Around this time is when he began studying theatre. The actor decided to quit school one year before graduation.
