Phillip Calvin McGraw was born in September of 1950 in Vinita, Oklahoma to parents Joseph and Anne Geraldine “Jerry” (née Stevens). The family was raised in the oilfields of North Texas where his father was an equipment supplier.

McGraw has two older sisters named Deana and Donna as well as a younger sister, Brenda.

After moving to Kansas with his father, McGraw attended Shawnee Mission North High School. There, he earned a football scholarship to the University of Tulsa. Later, he transferred to Midwestern State University and received a B.A. in psychology.
