Early life

Neal Brennan was born on October 19, 1973, in Villanova, Pennsylvania. He was born as the youngest of 10 kids born to his Irish Catholic parents. After he reached six years of age, his family moved from Villanova to Wilmette, Illinois in 1978. Neal mentioned that his family members from his father’s side were funny including his five older brothers.

Brennan realized that he was funny when he was 8 or 9 years old. By that time, he had also started performing material for his classmates emulating the comedians, Richard Lewis, David Brenner, and Jerry Seinfeld. When he was studying in high school, he used to watch a large number of comedy programs on TV. He even used to stay up late to watch the comedy shows, The Arsenio Hall Show and Late Night with David Letterman.

Brennan later realized that it is possible to make a living in comedy after watching his brother do stand-up comedy. After that, he moved to attend film school at NYU, however, he could not continue his study at NYU for more than a year. Then, he became a doorman at the now-defunct Boston Comedy Club where he met up with frequent performer, Dave Chappelle.

Neal performed his first stand-up comedy act in 1992. However, he decided not to perform stand-up after getting no laughs on his first stand-up act. He shifted to Los Angeles in the mid-1990s and became a writer for the dating show, Singled Out in 1995. Following that, he took over the writing jobs for the shows, Bzzz!, All That, and Kenan & Kel. He performed along with David Chappelle in the sketch comedy, Chappelle’s Show in January 2003.

In 2004, he was nominated for Emmy Awards for his incredible work as a writer, director, and producer of sketch comedy. The show also became Comedy Central’s highest-rated show by the end of its second season. In 2011, he along with comedian, Moshe Kasher, and Dj Douggpound began a podcast, The Champs. The podcast was named the Best Podcast as part of LA Weekly’s Best of L. A. Issue.

Then, he developed and performed in a comedy show, 3 Mics in Los Angeles in 2015. In the show, he used three microphones; first for reading one-liners from index cars, the second for talking about dealing with depression, and the third for performing traditional stand-up comedy. The comedy show was released on Netflix in 2017.

Following that, he and his actress friend, Bianca Siavoshy began a podcast, How Neal Feel in 2019. On November 8, 2022, Neal came up with his second comedy special, Neal Brennan: Blocks. In the Netflix series, he performs a sharp and soul-searching set of comedy against a backdrop depicting different parts of his life.

He wrote in his tweet, talking to his girlfriend when she is mad is like doing stand-up for a mostly black crowd as if they are listening but really just want him to stop. Following then, he talked about his girlfriend during an interview in 2016. In the interview, he shared that the best version of that ever was about 10 years ago when he was with his girlfriend who is mixed. He used to walk with his girlfriend on 125th street in Harlem where he could feel that some dudes are staring at him and her.
