Kathy was born on February 6, 1957, in San Diego, California. She was born to Fred Najimy and Samia Massery. Her dad was known to be a postal worker. While her mom was originally from Lebanon and had immigrated to U. S. in 1946. She was 14 when her father died.

Najimy studied at Crawford High School. Then, she attended San Diego State University and graduated in 1995. She was interested in acting and comedy from the beginning. In 1986, she appeared in a feminist comedy play, The Kathy and Mo Show. The comedy play had three-term runs in New York City. Likewise, the play has generated two HBO specials titled The Dark Side and Parallel Lives.

Kathy started her acting career in the early 1990s by appearing in several offbeat minor roles in movies. She got her first lead role in the 1992 comedy movie, Sister Act. Following that, she appeared as Mary Sanderson in the fantasy comedy movie, Hocus Pocus. Then, she continued to star in other movies such as Rat Race, Wall-E, and A Madea Christmas.

Najimy also appeared in various TV roles. She played a recurring role in the medical drama series, Chicago Hope in 1994. Afterward, she became a part of the NBC sitcom, Veronica’s Closet. Along with her movie and TV roles, she has appeared in various Broadway plays. She appeared as Mae West in Broadway hit play, Dirty Blonde. In 1992, she co-created and directed the musical revue, Back to Bacharach and David.

In 2018, she was featured in the Netflix movie, Dumplin’ alongside actress, Jennifer Aniston. Kathy then appeared in the musical drama movie, Music in 2021. The movie was directed by singer, Sia. That same year, she featured in a Christmas romantic Netflix comedy, Single All the Way. The comedy movie ranked at 6 on Netflix’s top 10 weekly rankings in its debut week.

Kathy has been a part of the sequel of Hocus Pocus titled Hocus Pocus 2 which was released on September 30. She revealed that she filmed half of Hocus Pocus 2 with a broken rib. Kathy felt like an accordion while filming with a broken rib. The accident occur at one of her friend’s houses, when she got into the machine which flipped up and her foot didn’t quite make it into the thing. Then, she felt like an accordion.

Najimy had a whole week off and it was like she was enjoying the holidays. During the time, she was healing, and then, she got back at work filming for the remaining half of Hocus Pocus 2.

Personal Life

Kathy Najimy is married to a former comedy actor and singer, Dan Finnerty. Her husband was a part of the Dan Band in 1998. Together, the pair shares a daughter, Samia who is a singer and songwriter. Prior to getting married, she had already gone through an abortion when she was 18.
