Early life

Ben Akren was born on July 18, 1984, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, United States. He was born in the house of Chuck and Michele Askren. He has a younger brother named Max, who is also a wrestler. His brother has won the 2010 national championship.

Ben completed his high school education at Arrowhead High School. While studying in high school, he became a 2-time state champion in wrestling. Later, he joined the University of Missouri, where he turned into an amateur wrestler.

In 2004, he competed at National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). However, he didn’t earn the victory in his early matches. He lost the wrestling match to Chris Pendleton for two years in 2004 and 2005. Ben came back in form in 2006 and continued his victory in 2007. During the time he wrestles in NCAA, he was noticed for his pinning ability.

During the 2005-06 junior season, he dominated the game by winning all 45 matches with 25 pins. He was going undefeated in the junior season, which earned him the Outstanding Wrestler Award at NCAA Championships.

Ben continued his dominant game during senior season in 2006-07. He held the undefeated record of 42-0. He registered his second NCAA championship title defeating Keith Gavin. Ben, later got a victory at the Dan Hodge Trophy match. With the win, he became the second person to grab the Dan Hodge Trophy twice.

He also had an excellent collegiate wrestling career. He set the winning record of 153 to 8. In 2008, he made entry to the Olympic games. He had a dream of taking a gold medal from the Olympics. However, he lost the match to Cuban wrestler Ivan Fundora. .His dream of winning the gold medal at the Olympics shattered after he lost the match.

After Olympics, he decided to be an MMA fighter. He played his first MMA fight on February 7, 2009, against Josh Flowers. He defeated Josh in the first round with a TKO.

In 2010, he got a chance to take revenge with Fundora at Cerro Pelado International. He earned the victory against Fundora defeating in the semi finale match.

Ben has been quite impressive during Bellator Fighting Championships. On April 15, 2010, he registered his first victory at Bellator 14 defeating Ryan Thomas. He played the final fight at Bellator 97 against Andrey Koreshkov. Ben dominated in his last fight at Bellator, winning the match in the fourth round by TKO.

After the end of the contract with Bellator, he was signed for a 2-year contract with ONE Championship on December 9, 2013. He played his last fight at ONE Championship against Shinya Aoki. Ben defeated Shinya in the first round with a TKO.

Ben, later started fighting at UFC. He made his UFC debut against Robbie Lawler on 2nd March 2019. His last fight at UFC came on October 26, 2019, where he faced Demian Maia. Though he lost the last match, he was given the “Fight of the Night” award. He announced his retirement from the MMA competition on November 18, 2019.
