Early Life
Weird Al Yankovic was born in October 1959 in Downey, California. He was born to Nick Yankovic and Mary Elizabeth (nee Vivalda). His father served as a medic during World War II and earned two Purple Hearts for his service. His parents married in 1949 and moved to California.
Yankovic was introduced to an accordion first time before he turned seven. His parents were offered a choice of guitar lessons or accordion at a local music school by a door-to-door salesman. In the end, his parents selected the accordion. Yankovic used to practice the instrument at home as his mom did not permit him to go outside the house. He continuously learned the accordion lessons at the school for 3 years before making a decision to learn on his own.

Yankovic was hugely influenced by the singer, Elton John’s 1973 album, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road. Due to that, he even learned to play rock ‘n roll on the accordion. Later, he became interested in comedy and parody music by getting influenced by artists such as Stan Freberg, Tom Lehrer, Shel Silverstein, Spike Jones, and Frank Zappa. He was also influenced by the British comedy troupe, Monty Python.
Weird studied at Lynwood High School where he was more active in extracurricular programs. He graduated from high school in 1975. Later, he joined the California Polytechnic State University and earned a Bachelor’s degree in architecture.
Yankovic was 16 when he gave Dr. Demento a homemade cassette tape of his original and payday songs that he performed on the accordion. Eventually, Dementoy played the tape’s first single, Belvedere Cruisin on his comedy radio show. Then, he became a DJ at KCPR while studying at California Polytechnic State University. Yankovic released his first recording as Alfred Yankovic in 1978. The song ” Take Me Down ” mocked famous landmarks like the waterfall toilets at the Madonna Inn and Bubblegum Alley.
Yankovic was brought as a part of Demento’s stage show for the first time on a tour in 1981. His stage performance eventually brought him to the attention of the manager, Jay Levey who asked him on creating a full band. Then, he formed a band and performed his first show on March 31, 1982. That same year, he recorded a parody song, I Love Rocky Road which led him to sign with Scotti Brothers Records. He released his first self-titled album in 1983. After that, he released his second album, Weird Al Yankovic in 3-D.
In 1990, he returned to the studio for his next album, Off the Deep End. Following that, his next two studio albums were released which were modest successes. In 2003, he released his next studio album, Poodle Hat. Then in 2006, he came up with the album, Straight Outta Lynwood which turned out to be his first certified platinum album.
Yankovic released his new single, The Hamilton Polka from the musical Hamilton in March 2018. Soon after that, he released a video version of The Hamilton Polka in July 2020. Besides his music career, he has also appeared in numerous movies such as Batman Vs. Robin, Sandy Wexler, Teen Titans Go! Vs. Teen Titans and Bill & Ted Face the Music. In 2022, he produced and co-written his biopic movie, Weird: The Al Yankovic Story starring Daniel Redcliffe.
Personal Life
Weird Al Yankovic is married to Suzanne Krajewski. He met Suzanne who was working as a marketing executive at 20th Century Fox in 2001. He married Suzanne on February 10, 2001. They were blessed with their daughter, Nina in 2003. Yankovic lost his parents in April 2004 who died at their home due to accidental carbon monoxide poisoning from the fireplace. He went through LASIK eye surgery in January 1998 to correct his extreme myopia.
