John Garvin Weir was born in July of 1984 in Coatesville, Pennsylvania to parents John and Patti (née Moore). His father was a nuclear power plant engineer, while his mother was a nuclear power plant worker and home inspector.

Of Norwegian heritage, Weir has one sibling, a younger brother by the name of Brian “Boz”.

Meanwhile, Johnny and his brother were raised in an Amish-dominated rural town named Quarryville. However, they would later relocate to New Britain, Connecticut, and then Newark, Delaware according to Philadelphia Magazine.

Weir was an honor roll student at Newark High School before enrolling at the University of Delaware. Yet, he would drop out before receiving his linguistics degree.

Weir began honing his craft of figure skating throughout the 1990s. Then, he became eligible to compete in the Junior Grand Prix during the 1999–2000 season. By 2001, he was ranked 18th-best in the world.
